Kapaleeswarar temple was built in 7th century by pallava kings. Lord Shiva is the main deity and accompanied by his wife pavathi in form of Karpagambal in the temple. Kapaleeswarar temple is located in Mylapore, Chennai. Ancient puranas states Brahma failed to show respect to lord Shiva. Due to this lord Shiva took one Brahma’s head. So Brahma came down to mylapore and created a Shiva lingam to calm lord Shiva’s anger on him. Some say Lord Brahma had worshiped lord Shiva here to get his lost power. Lord Shiva is worshiped in form of lingam and called as Kapaleeswarar. This temple was built around 7th century in Dravidian architecture. The temple has two gopurams, the eastern gopuram is 40m high and western goupuram is bit shorter and faces the temple’s sacred tank.
