Thiruvanaikovil Temple


Thiruvanaikovil temple is situated in Thiruchirapalli, Tamil Nadu which is also called as Tiruvanaikaval surrounded by river Cauvery and coleroon. Thiruvanaikovil temple is very popular for Lord Shiva and it is one among the pancha bootha temples. This temple symbolizes Water form. Lord shiva is in form of lingam and commonly known as “Appu Linga”. The formation of Appu Lingam is formed as said by Lord Shiva to Goddess parvathi to conduct her penance in Jambu forest under Venn Naaval tree, as she made a Lingam in form of water in the river Cauvery also known as ponni and worshiped Lord Shiva which came to known as “Appu Lingam/Water Lingam. The main goddess for this temple is “Akilandeshwari Amman”. The history of the temple says as elephant worshiped the Lord Shiva the location is came to known as “Thiruvanai Kaa” which later the name is changed to “Thiruvanaikovil”. Thiruvanaikovil is also famously called as “Jambukeswaram” and the lord Shiva as “Jambu Lingam”. The specialty of this temple is afternoon pooja conducted by the priest in the temple for Lord Shiva and Ko Maatha/Cow and the devotees of this temple used for wait see this pooja and get blessings from god. Anna abhishekam to Lord Shiva Lingam is done on a daily basis at Thiruvanaikovil temple.
