Meenakshi Amman Temple



Meenakshi Amman Temple is located in Madurai in the state of Tamil Nadu. In this temple Lord Shiva is known as Sundareswarar and goddess parvati is known as Meenakshi. The main deity of this temple is Lord Meenakshi Amman. The Lord Meenakshi is made of emerald black stone and roof of the shrine of Meenakshi and Sundareswarar are gold plated. The temple was founded by Indra and golden Lotus flower has been blossomed for his pooja. There is a pond in this temple which is considered to be sacred and that holy water otherwise called as Adhi theertham, Sivaganga and Uthama Theertham. These three different theertham implies various specialties in it which is of great importance. In this temple it is believed the devotees who have bathe in this pond on a full moon day and other important days to worship the god will be blessed with all the well beings and success in life. The temple has a hall called as Meenakshi Nayyakar Mandapam which has 100 pillars in it. There are several other Mandapam which has its own importance. The temple has many priests to perform pooja for Lord Meenakshi on a daily basis and for special occasions. The important festival celebrated in this temple is teppakulam where on the day of Thai poosam the goddess Lord Meenakshi and Sundareswarar were decorated and taken to the lake and float them, the other major festivals celebrate in this temple is Meenakshi Thirukalyanam, Thiruvizah, Navaratri, Shivaratri and Avani moola Utsavam. The Friday is considered as the powerful day for Lord Meenakshi and the devotees who visit the temple on this day will be blessed with all prosperity in life.
